Amy, a newer employee at an old company, is fresh out of college in her first job. She, unfortunately, has been written up several times by middle management for absences from work. Amy has used all her sick and personal days and is now facing termination of her employment if she cannot resolve the issue with the human resources department.

Lola, the HR department head, meets with Amy in her private office. She reads through Amy’s file. Amy has reported that she’s been missing work to care for an older, sick relative. Lola feels some compassion for Amy’s conundrum and tries to look for anything in Amy’s contract that might help her stay with the company.

Lola finds some odd wording in the work agreement Amy signed when she onboarded. This part of the contract seems arcane, but the company began as a simple factory in the 19th century. These older parts of the employee work agreement seem to suggest that workers can be spanked as a form of disciplinary action. Lola presents spanking as an option to Amy, which could be a loophole that allows her to keep her job. Lola has pointed out that much of Amy’s work can now be done by AI anyway…

Amy now has a strange dilemma. Should she agree to being spanked like a 19th-century factory hand so that she can avoid a gap in her resume? Is the strap and lashing better or worse than the possibility of being entirely replaced by new technology? (13:27 long)
